Crop Damage: Nature’s Number-One Offender

Since 1993 the National Weather Service has recorded $47 billion of crop damage across 30,825 storm events. Hail — the peril the crop-insurance and storm-restoration trades are built around — accounts for 9% of it. Drought and freeze together account for 79%. Crops are imperiled by a relatively slow-moving force.

Ask a farmer what wrecks a crop

The industries that price and repair weather damage to crops are organised around sudden perils. Hail has a claims-adjustment trade attached to it, an aerial-imagery industry, a per-address verification market. Ask which weather event costs American agriculture the most, and hail is the intuitive answer.

The National Weather Service has been recording the answer for three decades. For every storm event its offices log, they enter a crop-damage figure alongside the property-damage one. We added them up by peril.

It isn’t about how often

Drought is not first because it happens often. It is first because of what it costs when it happens.

Hail is far more common: the record holds 3,579 damaging hail episodes against 550 drought episodes. But the median damaging hail episode records $45,000 of crop loss, and the median drought episode records $3,127,500. That is a factor of 69, and the separation is far beyond anything sampling noise could produce.

A hail event is a bad afternoon in one county. A drought is a bad season across a whole region — and the record prices them accordingly.

We tried three ways to break it

A ranking like this can be an artefact of how the records are kept, so we attacked it three ways before believing it.

The bookkeeping. A drought spanning forty-five counties files forty-five rows, and sometimes each one carries the same damage figure. If that is one estimate copied rather than a total shared out, summing overcounts. Counting each such episode once instead strips $4.6B from drought and $2.1B from freeze — and changes nothing about the order. Freeze still beats hail.

The unequal records. Hail, wind and tornado have event records reaching back to the 1950s; the other ten perils begin in 1996. Restricting every peril to the same 1996–2025 window leaves drought at 63.3%, freeze 17.1%, hail 8.3%. If anything, drought looks slightly worse.

The exceptional years. 2012 alone carries a fifth of all recorded drought crop loss. Remove it and drought is still 57.3%. Remove the four costliest years in the entire record and drought is still 54.5%, with hail still third.

What this says, and what it doesn’t

It says: in the measured record, agricultural loss is dominated by slow, wide, prolonged perils rather than fast, narrow, violent ones, by roughly four to one. Drought and freeze cost the crop; hail and wind cost the roof.

It does not say hail is unimportant — $4.4B is $4.4B, and hail loss lands concentrated in ways drought does not. It does not say drought is worse for any particular farm. And it emphatically does not say a drought episode is 69 times worse than a hail episode in any physical sense. A drought record covers a zone for months; a hail record covers a county for minutes. Some of that gap is real destructive reach and some of it is how the two get written down. The direction is solid; the multiple is not.

One more caveat worth stating plainly. These are damage estimates, entered by Weather Service offices at the time of reporting — not audited insurance settlements. The events are measured. The dollars are the best public per-event record that exists, and they are not accountancy.

Reproducibility

Every number on this page comes from the results.json file in the crop-loss-by-peril workspace. Pipeline: fourteen peril Eventdexes plus flood reports are read from the TerraPulse dex layer, all tracing to NOAA NCEI Storm Events; damage strings are parsed from their magnitude suffixes; totals are reported both as recorded and at a conservative floor; and all statistical inference runs at storm-episode level, because rows within one episode are not independent observations. No model, forecast or reanalysis field is used anywhere.
